Metal Gear Solid Drama CD Translations - Episode 2, Act 3

Scene 6: Defusal

Sounds of insects and birds. [Incidentally, this library file would later be used in Snake Eater. It first appears at Rassvet.]

Snake comes running over.

"Intruder 2" begins to play.

Mei Ling:

Snake, help!

Snake:

What is it?

Mei Ling:

I...I think I stepped on a...

Snake:

All right, just do not move, okay?

Snake crouches down and clears away the surrounding soil.

Snake:

(sighs) I don't believe you... I told you not to go wandering off.

Mei Ling:

So, Snake... Is this...Is this a landmine I'm standing on?

Snake takes out some of his gear.

Snake:

Yeah, I'm afraid so. It's a Mk4 mine – a C4-TNT mix. It's powerful enough to –

Mei Ling:

Blow my foot clean off?

Snake:

Heh, just what I'd expect from an information analyst.

Mei Ling:

(crying) This isn't the time for one of your jokes!

Snake:

Plus, it uses a shaped charge.

Mei Ling:

A shaped charge?

Snake:

Yeah, a charge designed to focus the energy of the blast in a single direction, thereby making it more powerful. If this thing goes off, it'll be taking a lot more than just your foot with it.

Mei Ling:

(crying) Thanks a lot, I didn't need to know all that!

Snake:

Anyway, don't move an inch until I say so. This type detonates when the pressure on it's released. Lemme borrow your combat knife.

Snake pulls Mei Ling's knife out of its sheath.

Mei Ling:

What are you going to do?

Snake:

Put this thing to bed.

An indeterminate amount of time passes.

Snake works on the mine.

Mei Ling:

The sun's started to come up... How much longer is it going to be, Snake? My foot's gone asleep.

Snake:

Gimme a break here. This takes time. It isn't like the movies.

Mei Ling:

You can see us perfectly from the road. If someone happened to come by again...

Snake:

We're in the middle of the jungle. We'll be fine as long as no one decides to go take a leak. ...All I need to do now is put the safety pin back in. I need a small piece of wire or something... (thinking) ...That'll do nicely.

Mei Ling:

What are you mumbling about?

Snake:

Lemme see your hairpin.

Mei Ling:

My hairpin?

Snake:

C'mon, let's go. The pin in your ponytail.

Snake grabs Mei Ling's hairpin.

Mei Ling:

Oww, that hurts! What do you need it for?

Snake:

We're almost done.

Snake works mine with hairpin.

Mei Ling:

I can't hold it any longer. My foot's killing me...

Snake:

Just hang in there. ...Damn.

Mei Ling:

What? What happened?!

Snake:

No, no, it's nothing. The pin just popped back out, that's all. I'll try it again.

Mei Ling:

Snake...

Snake works hairpin in again.

Snake:

All right, it's back in. We're fine now.

Mei Ling lets out a sigh.

Snake:

Now, slowly lift your foot off the mine.

Mei Ling:

(trying to move her foot) ...It's no use. I told you, I can't feel anything.

Snake:

Fine, I'll help you. Lean back on me.

Snake moves into position.

Snake:

Good, just like that. Okay, slowly now.

Mei Ling:

But...what if it goes off?

Snake:

Just trust me, okay? All right, let's go. Take your foot off on "three". One...

Snake and Mei Ling:

Two... Three!

Snake and Mei Ling step off mine.

"Intruder 2" stops.

A moment of silence is broken by the familiar sounds of the jungle.

Snake:

We actually made it... This must be their main factory. They've got surveillance cameras and guard towers everywhere... This place is like a fortress.

Mei Ling:

Yeah, this is definitely it. I'll take some pictures.

Mei Ling takes several pictures.

Mei Ling:

Now more people won't have to suffer...

Snake:

It must've been hell for you.

Mei Ling:

Huh?

Snake:

I read the file, then I realized why the Colonel decided to help you. The Basran people's struggle for independence in east Asia – the military brass ignore the intel you'd obtained, resulting in the gassings of thousands of refugees.

Mei Ling:

So you knew...

Snake:

If we were gonna be partners, I needed to know more about you.

Mei Ling:

You sure had me fooled.

Snake:

Sorry.

Mei Ling:

It's okay, Snake... Like you said, I'd identified a chemical weapons factory over there...but no one was interested.

Snake:

As long as there's no direct threat to national security, no one's gonna care. That's just the way it is.

Mei Ling:

It made me sick... The White House didn't do anything until after they'd received the reports of the gassings. It was all just some big show they put on, while all those poor people were dead.

Snake:

And that's why you're here.

Mei Ling:

I swore I'd never let it happen again. I wanted to get proof that would make them act. And...I also...

Snake:

There was another reason?

Mei Ling:

Snake, I...I wanted to...

Sound of bushes rustling.

Snake:

(whispering) Someone's coming! Hide!

Mei Ling:

They're headed this way!

The sentries appear.

Mei Ling:

They're only children!

Sound of two children's voices and laughter.

Snake:

(whispering) Damn, they're armed. If they spot us we're in trouble.

Snake readies his gun, attaching a suppressor.

Mei Ling:

What are you doing?!

Snake:

(whispering) Taking them down before they see us. Don't worry, I've attached a suppressor. No one'll hear a thing.

Snake cocks his gun.

Mei Ling:

No! (takes his gun away from him) They're just little kids!

Snake:

(whispering) Are you crazy?! If they see us they'll shoot us! Give it back to me!

Mei Ling:

No, Snake!

The voices fade away.

Mei Ling:

They're gone...

Snake:

I knew you weren't cut out for this. All right, hurry up and get the soil sample. We're pulling out in 5 minutes.

Mei Ling:

Snake...

Scene 7: Debriefing

A stack of papers hits a table.

Schultz:

How on earth did you get these photos and analysis results, Mei Ling?

Mei Ling:

With the help of the CIA. They too are concerned with the proliferation of such –

Schultz:

You can drop the act. (throwing papers on table) There's no way you could obtain intel like this without going directly to the site, and I don't remember us ever approving such an operation! Make no mistake – this was an illegal infiltration of a foreign country.

Campbell:

Brigadier General, if I may – we need to start formulating a strategy for how to deal with –

Schultz:

You can relax, Colonel. I've already taken care of it.

Mei Ling:

Taken care of it?

Schultz:

The White House has decided to use military force. We're going to launch cruise missiles at the factory.

Mei Ling:

What...?

Schultz:

Now listen to me – we obtained this information through an outside source. The United States was never there. Is that clear?

Schultz gets up and leaves the room.

Scene 8: Sunset

Sounds of waves and seagulls.

Footsteps approach on the sand.

Snake:

Watching the sunset alone on the beach? I never figured you as the sentimental type. ...I've been looking for you, Mei Ling.

Mei Ling:

Snake...

Snake:

You don't look too good.

Mei Ling:

I'm...I'm just tired...

Snake:

Tired?

Mei Ling:

It was all for nothing, everything I did... The people there have no idea what's coming...

Snake:

You mean the cruise missiles? ...I heard about it from the Colonel.

Mei Ling:

I...I actually thought I could save lives this time. But I was wrong. Someone always gets hurt in the end. Nothing's changed.

Snake:

It's not your fault.

"The Best is Yet to Come" begins to play.

Mei Ling starts to cry.

Mei Ling:

Why... Why do they have to do that to those people?! There must be some other way, right?! (hitting Snake) Everything we did, Snake...did it actually mean anything?

Snake:

Don't blame yourself, Mei Ling. You're not the one who made that decision.

Mei Ling:

Those little kids...

Snake:

They'll be fine, I'm sure they will.

Mei Ling:

No! They're all going to die!

Snake:

Come on, that's enough, Mei Ling...

Mei Ling continues to cry.

Snake:

Have you ever heard the saying, "Do the likeliest, and God will do the best"? It means no matter how hard you try, you can only do so much with something, and in the end the outcome is decided by some higher power. ...You did more than anyone ever expected you to, Mei Ling. You can't blame yourself.

Sound of seagulls.

Mei Ling:

Snake...

Mei Ling breaks down.

"The Best is Yet to Come" finishes.

Sounds of waves and seagulls fade out.
